- What is iSoftBox?
- iSoftBox turns an iPhone or iPad display into a clean, controllable light for photography. It can provide product or macro lighting, a backlight for film digitizing, illumination for astrophotography flat frames, or a broad source for light painting.
- What is the difference between HSB and CCT?
- HSB controls hue, saturation, and brightness so you can shape any color. CCT is for white light: temperature makes it warmer or cooler, tint shifts it between green and magenta, and intensity sets its strength.
- How do I switch color modes?
- Double-tap the light to open Light Controls, then choose HSB or CCT under Color Mode. Each mode keeps its own color adjustments while the app is open, and the current brightness or intensity carries across the switch.
- How do I adjust the light?
- In HSB mode, the default one-finger vertical, one-finger horizontal, and two-finger vertical swipes adjust brightness, saturation, and hue. In CCT mode, those same gestures adjust intensity, temperature, and tint. The gesture guide shows the bindings for the active mode.
- Can I customize the gestures?
- Yes. Open Light Controls and select Customize Gestures. You can assign a one- or two-finger vertical or horizontal swipe to each axis, leave an axis without a gesture, and choose which drag direction increases its value. You can also restore the defaults for the current color mode.
- How do I open the full light controls?
- Double-tap anywhere on the light surface. Light Controls lets you switch color modes and adjust the active mode's three sliders. It also contains gesture customization, Brightness Response, Brightness Curve, Preserve Settings, Color Accuracy guidance, and other app options.
- How do I show the gesture guide again?
- Open Light Controls with a double tap, then select Show Gesture Guide. The control sheet closes before the guide appears so you can see it over the light surface.
- How do I prevent accidental changes during a setup?
- Long-press the bottom-right corner and release your finger inside that corner to lock the light. Repeat the gesture to unlock it. While locked, iSoftBox ignores adjustment gestures and will not open Light Controls.
- Which brightness response should I choose?
- Automatic is the recommended starting point. Color Only is intended for emissive displays such as OLED, while Color and Backlight helps backlit displays such as LCD become genuinely dim at low settings. If brightness looks wrong, compare the two modes using neutral white at low brightness.
- Which brightness curve should I choose?
- Open Light Controls and select Brightness Curve. Perceptual is the default and gives finer control at low levels. Linear maps the displayed value directly to linear-light intensity. The chosen curve applies to brightness in HSB and intensity in CCT.
- How does Preserve Settings work?
- Light Controls has separate Preserve Settings switches for Color Mode and Color Adjustments. Enable Color Mode to reopen in the last selected mode. Enable Color Adjustments to restore each mode's last values. Both are off by default, and you can enable either one independently.
- How can I make the displayed color more consistent?
- In Light Controls, open Color Accuracy for guidance. For more consistent output, turn off True Tone and Night Shift in Display & Brightness, and Color Filters, Reduce White Point, and Auto-Brightness in Accessibility → Display & Text Size. Results still depend on the device and its display.
- Why does iSoftBox change the device's system brightness?
- Display brightness is part of the light output. iSoftBox temporarily controls it while the light is active and restores your previous setting when the app leaves the foreground. It also stores a temporary recovery value so it can restore the previous brightness after an interrupted session.
- Does iSoftBox need an internet connection?
- The photographic light works without an internet connection. iSoftBox contacts Apple's App Store services to check for updates and opens App Store pages only for update, rating, or review actions.
- Does iSoftBox collect personal data?
- No. iSoftBox requires no account, requests no access to protected personal data, and includes no advertising, analytics, or tracking technologies. Preferences remain on your device.
